The Leopards of the Democratic Republic of the Congo are determined to elevate their nation’s status on the international football stage as they prepare for their World Cup debut. The team is set to kick off their campaign against Portugal on Wednesday, June 17.
Newcastle United striker Yaone Wissa shared insights into the Congolese team’s ambitions ahead of the match. He emphasized that this World Cup represents more than just a competition for them; it is a chance to showcase the potential of Congolese football on a global platform.
While acknowledging the formidable reputation of the Portuguese squad, whom he regards as one of the elite teams in world football, Wissa maintains a confident outlook. He expressed the importance of not succumbing to an inferiority complex, stating, “This is an opportunity for us to restore the country to the position it deserves.”
Wissa added, “Portugal are one of the best teams in the world. We’ll be under a bit of pressure – that’s normal – but we must stay positive. They’re a better team than us, but we’re going to look them straight in the eye.”
