Manchester United lost 2-1 to Leeds United at Old Trafford after a tough first half, compounded by a red card.
After a 24-day break, Michael Carrick’s team returned to The Theatre of Dreams, looking to extend their lead over fourth-place Aston Villa, who drew 1-1 with Nottingham Forest.
Leeds, however, came out strong, taking the lead in the first five minutes through Noah Okafor, who scored after Dominic Calvert-Lewin had tested United’s goalkeeper Senne Lammens early on.
Okafor capitalized on a misplaced cross as Leny Yoro collided with Calvert-Lewin, allowing Okafor to easily slot the ball past Lammens.
Leeds fans celebrated again just 24 minutes later when Okafor scored his second goal. He took advantage of a mistake from Bruno Fernandes to find the net again, with the ball deflecting in off Yoro.
United found it tough to create meaningful chances, with Matheus Cunha receiving a yellow card for diving just before Leeds scored their second goal.
The Red Devils went into halftime 2-0 down, with little to show for their efforts apart from a goalline save by Lisandro Martinez.
In the second half, things worsened for United when they went down to ten men just 11 minutes in.
VAR intervened in the 56th minute, alerting referee Paul Tierney about an incident where Martinez grabbed Calvert-Lewin’s hair during an aerial duel, leading to a red card for “violent conduct.” United may appeal this decision.
Despite being a man down, United fought back and scored in the 69th minute. After a corner, Bruno Fernandes found Casemiro, who headed the ball home, marking his eighth goal of the season.
The final 20 minutes were tense as Diogo Dalot and Bryan Mbeumo replaced Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui. Matheus Cunha’s volley in the 80th minute required a save from Karl Darlow.
Benjamin Sesko also came close to scoring late on, but a header from Casemiro was cleared off the line by Calvert-Lewin.
Ultimately, United couldn’t secure an equalizer and now prepare for a match against Chelsea on Saturday, April 18, 2026.
Kobbie Mainoo is essential; Manuel Ugarte should leave
Todays’ match highlighted the absence of Kobbie Mainoo due to injury, giving Manuel Ugarte a chance to prove himself, which he failed to do.
This game showed how dependent Carrick is on Mainoo and Casemiro in midfield. With Ugarte, they lacked control, leading to being overrun.
Though Ugarte still has interest from other clubs, he should be sold this summer. Thankfully, Mainoo is reportedly close to signing a new contract.
United must rebuild their midfield this summer, especially with Casemiro leaving and Ugarte likely being offloaded.
Defensive issues for United
Martinez’s red card impacts not just this game but could jeopardize their Champions League chances.
United has been without Matthijs de Ligt since November due to injury, and Martinez has had his own injury problems.
With other injuries and suspensions, they are forced to rely on inexperienced players like Yoro and Ayden Heaven. While they show promise, it may hinder their development.
Without de Ligt and Martinez, Carrick will need to depend on young players to maintain the defense as they aim for a top-five finish.
More than just midfield needs strengthening
With the current squad, United will need to make moves across all positions for next season.
Although they have improved from last season’s 15th place to third, they lack depth and have been knocked out of the domestic cups early.
Injuries to centre-backs and the midfield struggle highlight the need for new signings.
United plans to sign two midfielders but will also need to secure a solid centre-back, especially with de Ligt’s future uncertain and Maguire aging.
The prices for targets in midfield are significant, so they will have to sell players to generate funds.
If this doesn’t happen, more losses could be on the horizon.
Need to bounce back
Unfortunately for fans, tonight’s match followed a concerning trend under Carrick, where United often find themselves needing to come from behind.
In Carrick’s 11 matches, United has gone behind five times and surrendered leads in four of those games.
Although Benjamin Sesko performed well as a substitute, the team’s need for him highlights their inability to control matches.
This match was no different, with the midfield struggling, yet the team seemed more eager to respond after being 2-0 down with ten men.
For a team looking to assert dominance, they should not need a red card or a goal against them to ignite that determination.
Despite winning seven matches under Carrick, they have not secured a victory without significant effort.
Champions League hopes dim
All these issues place immense pressure on United’s final six matches.
Martinez will miss key matches against Chelsea, Brentford, and Liverpool, all competing for Champions League spots.
Maguire’s role will be crucial alongside Yoro, increasing the pressure on both players.
With Mainoo’s injury concerns and Ugarte’s struggles, the path ahead looks increasingly challenging.
Fans hope Mainoo returns ready for the Chelsea match, and that Martinez and Maguire can partner up for the last three matches.
However, this remains uncertain at this point.
