Manchester United Nears Decision on Head Coach as Michael Carrick Leads the Race

Manchester United’s season has reached a critical juncture off the pitch, with senior club officials preparing to finalize one of the most significant decisions this summer regarding leadership at Old Trafford.

Discussions have intensified following the club’s strong form that has improved their league standings and secured Champions League qualification, relieving pressure on the club’s football operations as they plan for the next season.

As internal reviews move toward completion, key executives are expected to formalize a recommendation that could influence United’s trajectory for years to come.

Michael Carrick has emerged as the leading candidate to become Manchester United’s permanent head coach, with senior figures set to advocate for his appointment during an executive committee meeting this week, as reported by The Athletic.

Chief executive Omar Berrada and football director Jason Wilcox are understood to be fully aligned in endorsing Carrick’s appointment and are prepared to present their recommendation to co-owner Jim Ratcliffe.

While Ratcliffe holds final authority over key football decisions, there is increasing confidence within the club that Michael Carrick will continue beyond his interim role, as the majority ownership group led by the Glazer family reportedly is willing to defer sporting decisions to the INEOS framework.

United had also considered alternative candidates during their review process, including Andoni Iraola and Unai Emery, and conducted background checks on various options before momentum shifted decisively toward continuity.

Iraola has since been ruled out of contention, leaving Carrick as the clear frontrunner following a remarkable turnaround in results since his arrival in January.

The former midfielder took over a team positioned seventh in the Premier League, a considerable 11 points off the top four, yet has since steered them into third place, ensuring Champions League qualification with matches to spare.

His influence has garnered widespread praise within the dressing room, particularly following the thrilling 3-2 victory over Liverpool that secured United’s top-three finish.

After that match, match-winner Kobbie Mainoo encapsulated the team’s sentiment by telling Sky Sports, “we want to die for him (Carrick) on the pitch.”

Further support has surfaced from within the squad, with Amad Diallo also understood to have expressed his backing, while senior players like Bruno Fernandes, Matheus Cunha, and Harry Maguire have reportedly indicated their preference for Carrick to take the reins.

Carrick’s standing at the club is further solidified by his extensive history at Old Trafford, where he made 464 appearances over 12 years, winning five Premier League titles and a Champions League as a player.

Any final appointment will still need agreement on contract details and backroom staff roles, although sources suggest the current coaching arrangement is likely to remain unchanged if Carrick is confirmed.

For now, all eyes are on the upcoming executive meeting, where Manchester United’s long-term direction could be set in stone.
