Steve McClaren Considers Director Role at Rotherham United

Manchester United’s coaching staff has changed frequently in recent years. Several experienced figures have left Old Trafford and continued their careers elsewhere.

The club is also planning ahead for another busy summer.

Attention is now turning to former staff members working across English football.

One familiar name could now return in a new role away from the dugout.

Steve McClaren weighs up new role

Steve McClaren is considering a move to become director of football at Rotherham United, with talks ongoing over a senior position, according to BBC Sport.

The 64-year-old has been out of work since leaving his role as head coach of the Jamaica national football team in November.

He stepped down after the team failed to qualify automatically for the 2026 World Cup.

Steve McClaren now wants a return to football. He is seriously considering Rotherham’s offer.

The role would move him from coaching into executive leadership. It would include recruitment, sporting structure, and long-term planning.

Rotherham have struggled this season. They suffered relegation to League Two after finishing well below safety.

Despite that, the club’s owners remain ambitious. They believe McClaren could help rebuild their football structure.

McClaren remains well known to Manchester United supporters. He previously worked at Old Trafford as assistant to Erik ten Hag.

He left the club during the coaching reshuffle in 2024 after working closely with Ten Hag.

His managerial career began at Middlesbrough. There, he won the League Cup in 2004, the club’s first major trophy.

He later guided Middlesbrough to the UEFA Cup final in 2006.

That success led to his appointment as England manager later that year.

However, his time with the national team ended after just 16 months. England failed to qualify for Euro 2008.

McClaren has now spent time away from international football and top-level coaching.

He is now open to a different type of challenge. Rotherham have offered him a senior leadership role.

A final decision has not yet been made.

But Steve McClaren is seriously considering his next move in football.
