Alvaro Arbeloa Responds to Kylian Mbappe’s Fourth Striker Claim
Alvaro Arbeloa has denied ever indicating to Kylian Mbappe that he was the fourth striker for Real Madrid, as reported by GOAL.
“I wish I had four strikers. I don’t have four strikers, and I certainly didn’t say anything like that to Mbappe. He probably didn’t understand me,” Arbeloa stated.
His comments directly counter Mbappe’s suggestion that he ranked behind Franco Mastantuono, Vinicius Junior, and Gonzalo Garcia in the team’s attacking lineup.
Arbeloa framed the situation as a miscommunication rather than a formal demotion for Mbappe. The issue gained traction after sections of the Santiago Bernabeu crowd booed the French forward when he came on as a substitute in the 69th minute, amplifying an already sensitive situation.
Timing Key in Mbappe’s Real Madrid Status, Says Arbeloa
Arbeloa later clarified that his decision regarding Mbappe was tied to the player’s recent availability rather than a permanent change in his status within the squad.
“It’s clear that if I don’t play him, he can’t play. I’m the coach, and I’m the one who decides who plays and who doesn’t. I had a conversation with him before the match,” Arbeloa explained.
He added, “I don’t know how he might have interpreted it. A player who wasn’t on the bench four days ago shouldn’t have started today. It’s not a final; it’s not a do-or-die situation.”
This statement served as Arbeloa’s most straightforward justification. Given Mbappe’s recent injuries, the coach determined it was unwise to force him into a starting role immediately. Arbeloa’s comments also asserted his authority as coach, emphasizing that lineup decisions rest with him, regardless of the status of star players like Mbappe.
For Mbappe, the message is clear: while he has not been publicly demoted, he must work to regain his place in Arbeloa’s starting plans.
