Brighton’s Lorenz Ferdinand Shines at HKFC Soccer Sevens

Manchester United supporters have always kept a close eye on the next generation connected to the club, especially when famous surnames begin making headlines in professional football.

Across Europe and beyond, several sons of former players are now starting to carve out careers of their own.

This weekend, one familiar United family name found itself back in the spotlight after an impressive tournament run in Hong Kong.

And it ended with silverware.

Rio Ferdinand’s son was part of a successful campaign for Brighton & Hove Albion at the HKFC Standard Chartered Soccer Sevens tournament.

Brighton secured their second title in three years after defeating Yokohama F. Marinos 2-0 in Sunday’s final, further establishing themselves as one of the dominant sides in the competition.

The Premier League club had previously lifted the trophy in 2024 before falling short against AZ Alkmaar in last year’s final.

This time, however, Brighton completed the job in convincing fashion.

Forward Tyler Silsby opened the scoring early in the final with a strike inside the near post after just six minutes, immediately putting Yokohama under pressure.

Later in the second half, Jesse Middleton attempted his luck from distance, and the effort slipped through the grasp of Yokohama goalkeeper Go Saita to double Brighton’s lead and effectively seal the trophy.

One of the standout figures throughout the tournament was goalkeeper Lorenz Ferdinand, the 18-year-old son of former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand.

Brighton had already impressed before the final, winning all three of their group-stage matches on Saturday before eliminating Rangers 2-0 in the quarter-finals.

Their toughest test came in the semi-finals, where they came from behind to beat AZ Alkmaar 2-1 and gain revenge for last year’s defeat in the competition’s showpiece match.

After lifting the trophy, Lorenz Ferdinand admitted there was internal pressure within the club to succeed in Hong Kong.

“The club values the tournament very much, and there’s pressure from within to win here,” Lorenz Ferdinand said.

“The gaffer [Shannon Ruth] demands a lot, and we expect a lot from ourselves.”

The teenager also revealed that his father had been closely following the matches despite being away from England.

Rio Ferdinand, who now reportedly spends much of his time living in Dubai following his media work and post-playing career, was watching the tournament from afar and offering advice throughout the campaign.

“He’s been giving me a few tips, especially when I was trying to defend out wide of my goal,” the Brighton goalkeeper explained.

For Manchester United fans, seeing another Ferdinand beginning to make progress in elite football will naturally attract attention.

Rio Ferdinand remains one of the club’s most iconic modern defenders, and his son’s emergence at Brighton is already starting to create intrigue about what could come next in his career.
