In a surprising turn of events at Mbombela Stadium, Bernard Parker, the newly appointed coach of TS Galaxy, led his team to a 3-2 victory over defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns. This win not only marked Parker’s first as a head coach but also significantly impacted Sundowns’ title prospects.
Parker credited the victory to a combination of psychological advantage and a strategic game plan. He noted that Sundowns were under considerable pressure to not only win the match but also to score multiple goals, given their upcoming Champions League final. “We already had an advantage because of the psychological factor we have over them,” he stated.
Goals from Victor Letsoalo, Sedwyn George, and Mpho Mvelase secured the win for Galaxy, while Sundowns’ Colombian striker Brayan Leone scored twice. Parker emphasized the importance of discipline and unity in their defense, remarking, “We came up with a solution in terms of us keeping the discipline, taking the responsibility.”
He also highlighted the effectiveness of exploiting Sundowns’ high line, particularly through the pace of player Mahlambi. “Great one v one. In the past two games he gave us penalties, again today Tuesday,” Parker recalled, asserting that the game plan was successfully executed, enhancing their chances of counter-attacking effectively.
