Mamelodi Sundowns’ coach, Miguel Cardoso, is grappling with the unexpected downturn of the team’s season, attributing their struggles to a demanding schedule. Following a 3-2 defeat to TS Galaxy last night at Mbombela Stadium, Sundowns’ hopes for the Betway Premiership title have all but evaporated. The loss effectively ends their title race as Orlando Pirates now only require three points from their remaining two matches to secure the championship they have not won in 14 years.

Cardoso expressed his disappointment over the current situation, stating, “Let’s see what’s gonna happen, but it’s tough because I really wanted to be on that position top.” He emphasized that the rigorous calendar was a major factor in their decline, noting that Sundowns had previously achieved 11 consecutive victories since January but have since drawn twice and suffered a loss.

In addressing fans, Cardoso acknowledged the room for criticism but urged them to recognize the players’ hard work throughout the season. “I have big shoulders,” he remarked, adding, “I know the fans will be on our side on the weekend,” highlighting the need for support during this challenging time.

He reflected on the team’s recent knockout round exits, which included two defeats on penalties and challenges in the Nedbank Cup due to necessary player changes. Cardoso called for fans to take a broader perspective, suggesting a comprehensive analysis of the team’s performance should follow the conclusion of the season.
