Richarlison Steps Up as Tottenham Prepares for Key Match Against Aston Villa

West Ham’s defeat to Brentford on Saturday has delivered a crucial morale boost for Tottenham Hotspur ahead of their match against Aston Villa. Currently in the relegation zone, Spurs have a significant opportunity to climb out by securing a victory on Sunday.

Roberto De Zerbi faces a challenging selection process as he prepares for the Aston Villa clash. With Xavi Simons sidelined by an ACL injury and Dominic Solanke facing a race against time to recover from a hamstring issue suffered against Wolves, the Tottenham manager is under pressure to find effective attacking solutions. He has hinted at employing a forward trio of Richarlison, Mathys Tel, and Randal Kolo Muani in his press conference.

Richarlison has generated mixed opinions among Spurs supporters regarding his place in the starting lineup. However, he remains the team’s leading scorer this season, with 10 goals in all competitions (15 G/A overall). De Zerbi introduced the Brazilian in the first half against Wolves after Solanke’s departure, contributing to Spurs’ first win of 2026.

Roberto De Zerbi Discusses Richarlison’s Role

Richarlison seems poised to take Solanke’s place in the starting XI for Spurs. The 28-year-old’s physicality, tenacity, and aerial prowess add a different element to Tottenham’s attack compared to Solanke. Though he may struggle with link-up play, his on-field attributes make him a challenging opponent for defenders.

De Zerbi has praised Richarlison as a “sensitive and pure guy,” emphasizing the need for the team to create scoring opportunities for him. Following an unsatisfactory second-half performance against Wolves, he is eager for his squad to enhance their play in specific areas.

“Richarlison is a great guy because he is a sensitive guy, I like him as a player and as a man. What he thinks you can understand immediately from his face, or his eyes. It’s pure,” De Zerbi remarked in his press conference (h/t Football London).

“We have to put him in the right condition to score. I want to put all the attackers in the right condition to attack the space, to shoot, to go one-to-one, to play between the lines, and to make the assists. In the second half at Wolves, we didn’t.”
