Manchester United is facing significant challenges at a critical moment in the season.
The team’s momentum has already dipped after a loss to Leeds United, but things have gotten worse following a recent disciplinary decision, leaving Michael Carrick with limited options in defense.
Reports from The Sun indicate that United’s appeal against Lisandro Martinez’s red card has failed, resulting in a suspension that will keep him out of three important matches.
Martinez was sent off during the 2-1 loss for pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair, an action initially overlooked by referee Paul Tierney, who was later informed by VAR official John Brooks to review the incident.
This call has led to controversy, but the governing body has maintained the decision, meaning United will be without one of their top defenders during a crucial part of the season.
Martinez will not participate in the upcoming match against Chelsea, and will also miss games against Brentford and Liverpool, which are vital for United’s Champions League ambitions.
Carrick expressed his frustration over the situation, particularly given the string of unfavorable decisions affecting his team lately.
“Honestly, there isn’t much we can say,” he stated. “We’re really disappointed about several decisions in recent weeks, but we need to push forward. The ruling has been made, and while we disagree with it, we have to accept it.”
The timing of this suspension is particularly challenging, as United’s defensive lineup is already stretched thin. Harry Maguire is serving a suspension due to an upheld misconduct charge, and Matthijs de Ligt is out with a long-term back injury.
This leaves Carrick relying on younger players like Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven, who will face significant pressure.
Martinez’s absence is especially upsetting for the team, considering he has already dealt with several injuries this season, including a serious calf issue that kept him sidelined for a long period.
He also faced muscular issues over the winter, preventing him from gaining the consistency needed just as United was stabilizing defensively.
As a result, his suspension further disrupts his season. The FA’s guidelines on violent conduct clearly state that pulling an opponent’s hair with force is considered a serious foul and warrants punishment.
United argued that Martinez was merely trying to contest for the ball without using excessive force, but this defense was ultimately dismissed.
