Manchester United‘s Bruno Fernandes Sets New Premier League Assist Record
With Manchester United’s season now over, attention will shift to other areas the club wants to improve ahead of next season.
The team has shown flashes of consistency in key matches, with set pieces and midfield creativity often proving decisive in tight contests. Supporters have also closely tracked individual milestones as the campaign progressed.
Sunday’s win over Brighton added another talking point to an already eventful run-in.
The focus briefly turned to one of United’s most influential performers as the side secured a commanding 3-0 victory away at Brighton & Hove Albion. The match itself carried plenty of incident, but the opening goal soon became the center of debate.
A delivery by Bruno Fernandes from a corner created a frantic sequence inside the box involving Patrick Dorgu and Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. What followed was anything but straightforward, with the ball appearing to ricochet off the crossbar before bouncing around the area and eventually ending up in the net.
That moment proved significant for Fernandes, who had taken the corner and was initially credited with his 21st assist of the Premier League season.
However, confusion quickly spread as replays suggested multiple deflections, including the possibility of an own goal. Social media reaction escalated rapidly, with many questioning whether the assist would ultimately stand given the chaotic nature of the goal.
Despite the uncertainty, clarity has now arrived from official channels.
Bruno Fernandes Record-Breaking Assist Confirmed
Arsenal-fc/news/premier-league-confirm-bruno-fernandes-34006583″ rel=”noopener”>Football London reported that the Premier League has confirmed that the original decision will not be altered, meaning the goal remains attributed to Dorgu and Fernandes keeps the assist.
A league spokesperson explained: “It was determined a [Patrick] Dorgu goal yesterday. Initially by Opta, then no change from the Goal Accreditation Panel,” effectively closing the debate.
The ruling means Fernandes’ tally now stands as a new Premier League benchmark for most assists in a single season. The panel, consisting of two independent football experts alongside a PGMOL representative, reviewed the incident and opted not to intervene.
Among those whose records have now been surpassed is Thierry Henry, who previously held the single-season assist record with 20 during the 2002/03 campaign. Henry has since graciously responded to Fernandes’ achievement, sending a message through Steven Bartlett stating: “Please send my regards to him. I love him! Braino Fernandes!”
For Manchester United, the confirmation adds another statistical highlight to Fernandes’ season, reinforcing his role as the creative force at the heart of the team as they push toward the end of the campaign.
