Inter Miami star Lionel Messi has bought UE Cornella, a soccer team in Spain’s fifth division.
The club from Catalonia shared the news on Thursday, but details about the purchase were not revealed.
The team stated, “This move shows Messi’s strong connection to Barcelona and his dedication to developing local talent in Catalonia, a bond formed during his time at FC Barcelona and lasting thereafter.”
Cornella (16-7-7) is currently in third place in Group 5 of Spain’s Tercera Federacion.
“Leo Messi’s arrival starts a new chapter for the club, focusing on both sporting and institutional growth, reinforcing its foundation, and investing in talent,” the team noted. “The project aims for long-term success and follows a strategic plan that balances ambition, sustainability, and a deep local connection.”
Messi is currently in his fourth season with Inter Miami. The 38-year-old Argentine forward is a two-time reigning MLS MVP and has won the Ballon d’Or award eight times, recognizing him as the world’s best player. He helped Miami win the MLS Cup in 2025 and led Argentina to victory in the FIFA World Cup in 2022.
