Former Manchester City striker Clive Allen considers 19-year-old young player Rico Lewis to be an important asset for the club nicknamed “The Citizens”.
“Not only as a right-back, he can also play in several positions. He is a massive asset for the squad,” Allen said, quoted from Manchester City’s official website in Jakarta, Tuesday.
The former footballer who strengthened City in the 1989-1991 period said that Rico Lewis was able to show his talent and ability when trusted to play.
This was seen when Lewis played for 90 minutes in Manchester City’s first match in the 2024-2025 Premier League against hosts Chelsea. In that match, he appeared impressive and led City to a 2-0 win.
“You can see the manager (Pep Guardiola-ed) who appreciates not only his performance but also what he gives to the team,” Allen said.
Rico Lewis is a young English player who has shone after being trained by Manchester City since his academy days.
Since being promoted to the Manchester City senior team in the 2022-2023 season until now, Lewis has played in a total of 52 matches and scored three goals.
Meanwhile, regarding Manchester City’s performance as a team in the 2024-2025 Premier League, Clive Allen called it extraordinary.
According to him, City managed to strengthen their relationship as a unit and continue to work together for the team.
“Every player does their job well. In addition, their relationship with the supporters is also real. City shows consistency. Seeing their early matches in the league, the manager smiled because he was happy with the results,” said Allen.
Next in the second week of the 2024-2025 Premier League, Manchester City will host the promoted team Ipswich Town at the Etihad Stadium, Saturday (24/8).
Before that match, Ipswich Town lost 0-2 at home to Liverpool.
“It’s been a tough start to the league for Ipswich Town. After playing against Liverpool, they meet City. But I’m sure they will surprise some teams in the league,” said Allen.
