Rotherham United Faces League Two Challenge After Relegation

Rotherham United is set to return to League Two after thirteen years, finishing 23rd in League One and thereby being relegated from the third tier of English football.

The Millers have spent much of the last decade oscillating between the Championship and League One, often gaining automatic promotion back to the second tier following relegation.

Now, however, Rotherham is entering a rebuilding phase, adjusting their squad in preparation for the upcoming campaign with the aim of returning to League One by the 2027/28 season.

In this context, the club has released a total of eleven players, as reported on their official website, including former Manchester United academy player Duncan Watmore.

The 32-year-old right-winger was part of the United academy before moving to Altrincham FC, where he signed his first professional contract.

Throughout his 15-year career, Watmore has played for Hibernian, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, and Millwall before joining Rotherham in February 2026, after remaining without a club for seven months.

Watmore now faces another uncertain period if he cannot find a new club, and he is not the only former Manchester United player leaving Rotherham this summer.

The League One side has taken both Dan Gore and Gabriel Biancheri on loan from The Red Devils, with both players now set to return to Carrington following the end of the season.

While Gore has gained further experience in competitive football after previous loan spells with Port Vale and Rotherham, this has marked Biancheri’s first opportunity to gain senior minutes.
