Ruben Amorim, the former manager of Manchester United, is reportedly nearing a surprising return to football months after his exit from Old Trafford.
Manchester United made the decision to sack Amorim back in January after a challenging period in charge.
The Portuguese coach struggled to achieve the desired results during his brief tenure.
Michael Carrick was subsequently appointed on an interim basis.
Under Carrick’s guidance, United has rebounded to secure a Champions League spot and he is poised to be confirmed as the permanent manager for the 2026/27 season.
Preparations for a significant summer overhaul are already in progress at Old Trafford.
Amorim’s final months with United coincided with a challenging phase for the club.
Major squad changes are anticipated this summer, particularly following Casemiro’s confirmed departure at season’s end.
Now, according to The Sun, Amorim is making strides toward a return to management.
The report indicates that the 41-year-old is on the brink of taking over at Benfica amid major shifts involving several prominent European clubs.
Reports suggest that Jose Mourinho may leave Benfica, even after leading the team to an unbeaten domestic league season.
The Portuguese club finished third, missing out on Champions League qualification.
Mourinho is now rumored to be in talks for a possible return to Real Madrid.
If that happens, it could facilitate Amorim’s appointment at Benfica.
This potential move marks a return to familiar territory for Amorim after a challenging experience in England.
Before his stint with Manchester United, the Portuguese manager had distinguished himself as one of Europe’s most promising young coaches while at Sporting CP.
Amorim also has connections to Benfica from his playing days, having spent several years there before retiring in 2017.
As reported, Benfica president Rui Costa holds a strong admiration for the former United manager and is advocating for his hiring ahead of the next season.
The Sun also noted that Manchester City had previously shown interest in Amorim before hiring Hugo Viana for their backroom staff.
However, Amorim is not expected to be considered for the managerial position to replace Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium.
