Tottenham Hotspur Looks to Replace Guglielmo Vicario as Transfer Rumors Intensify
Tottenham Hotspur’s first-choice goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario, is recovering from hernia surgery and aiming to return for the conclusion of the season. Behind the scenes, reports suggest that he has agreed to join Inter Milan in the summer.
Inter Milan has expressed confidence in signing Vicario as they look for a replacement for Yann Sommer. A transfer agreement with Tottenham needs to be reached. The Spurs management has been cautious regarding the ongoing speculation about Vicario’s potential move to Inter and must now identify a quality replacement ahead of the 2026/27 season.
Remaining in the Premier League would enable Tottenham to attract goalkeepers from elite clubs. Manchester City’s James Trafford has emerged as a primary target for the upcoming season. Tottenham plans to pursue the English player’s signature, but the effort is expected to be challenging.
Interest Grows for James Trafford
According to a report from iNews, several clubs including Aston Villa, Chelsea, and Newcastle United have shown interest in James Trafford.
Aston Villa has begun discussions for the Manchester City goalkeeper, eyeing him as a replacement for Emi Martinez. Newcastle, seeking a new goalkeeper after Nick Pope’s disappointing performances, has prioritized Trafford as their top target. Chelsea is also considering the England international if he becomes available at a reasonable price.
The report adds that Trafford is open to leaving the Etihad Stadium this summer, with a fee of around £40 million potentially enticing City to permit their second-choice goalkeeper to depart.
After returning to Manchester City last summer, Trafford primarily participated in domestic cup games. Pep Guardiola entrusted him in goal during the FA Cup final against Chelsea, where he successfully maintained a clean sheet.
Tottenham Faces Competition for Trafford
Trafford is a respected goalkeeper in the English football scene, showcasing significant potential. To fulfill this potential, the 23-year-old needs regular playing time, effective coaching, and a well-structured development environment.
With Gianluigi Donnarumma occupying the first-choice spot, Trafford’s game time at City is likely to remain limited. He needs to leave his boyhood club for a second time to secure regular minutes, with Tottenham emerging as a suitable option.
As Vicario edges closer to leaving, Spurs can offer Trafford a guaranteed starting position in the near future. However, as of now, Chelsea, Villa, and Newcastle are positioned favorably in the race, primarily due to their confirmed Premier League status for next season.
Until Tottenham secures its top-flight status, competing for the City shot-stopper’s signature will prove difficult.
