Chelsea Defeats Tottenham 2-1, Leaving Spurs in Relegation Battle
Tottenham Hotspur is facing relegation on the final day of the season following a 2-1 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night. This defeat puts their Premier League survival in jeopardy.
Enzo Fernandez opened the scoring with a stunning long-range shot into the bottom corner in the 18th minute. Andrey Santos extended Chelsea’s lead with a close-range finish in the 67th minute. Tottenham found a glimmer of hope when Richarlison converted a backheel pass from Pape Matar Sarr with 16 minutes to go, but they failed to find the equalizer.
This marked Tottenham’s second defeat under manager Roberto De Zerbi. With this outcome, the North London club sits in 17th place, just two points above West Ham. To secure their top-flight status, they must avoid defeat against Everton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday or rely on Leeds United to get a favorable result against West Ham.
James Maddison Reflects on Tottenham’s Loss to Chelsea
James Maddison made his second appearance of the season, coming off the bench shortly after Chelsea doubled their lead. Tottenham struggled to create space in midfield, prompting Roberto De Zerbi to turn to Maddison. His introduction lifted the visitors’ tempo, allowing them to find opportunities to attack.
A foul by Moises Caicedo on Conor Gallagher just outside the box resulted in a stoppage-time free-kick, giving Tottenham a last chance to equalize. However, Maddison’s effort went over the bar, marking a missed opportunity to save his team’s top-flight status.
Frustrated by the result, Maddison described the match as fairly balanced. He noted that Tottenham “pushed hard” in the final 20 minutes for a result at Stamford Bridge.
“We knew any sort of result would be very beneficial for us in the battle. It wasn’t to be. We pushed hard in the last 20 minutes. It was probably a pretty even game. I don’t remember them having many chances,” Maddison said in an interview with Sky Sports.
