England’s Squad Announcement Sparks Debate Amid Leaked List

England’s squad announcement was partly leaked before Friday, but Thomas Tuchel still managed to spark major debate when the full list arrived.

Ivan Toney and Djed Spence were surprise inclusions, while Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, and Trent Alexander-Arnold were left out.

Beyond that, Noni Madueke’s call-up was one of the more debated choices, especially when his Premier League output is compared to other attacking options.

Madueke managed just three Premier League goal contributions this season, a tally that falls well short of several players overlooked or debated.

Morgan Gibbs-White and Jarrod Bowen both finished with 18 goals and assists, while Foden registered 12 and Palmer had 10.

That comparison is not completely like for like. Madueke is a winger whose pace and directness give England a specific profile.

Bowen is the only proper winger in that group, while Foden and Palmer are left-footed attackers who have played from the right with different traits.

Even so, the numbers explain why Tuchel’s choice drew mixed reactions. Madueke’s inclusion looks based more on role, balance, and profile than raw production.

Tuchel defended his wider squad logic by saying England were not simply collecting the 26 most talented players, but building the best possible team.

That argument may explain Madueke’s place, especially if the manager wanted speed, width, and one-v-one threat from the bench.

But with other attackers producing far more in the league, his call-up is likely to remain one of the squad’s most questioned decisions.
