Tottenham’s Transfer Narrative Sparks Concerns from Former Everton CEO

Amid another chaotic season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, speculation has intensified. Keith Wyness, former CEO of Everton and now a consultant for elite football clubs, warns that some of the rumors circulating could be perilous for the club.

The warning arises from the club’s loss of control over its transfer narrative. No team wants to combat rumors suggesting its top players might be sold due to a fear of relegation. Wyness informed Football Insider that this situation compels the club to take action to reassure fans.

“Spurs are putting out a lot of press stuff right now. They’re getting themselves connected with all sorts of top players if they’re going to come in, if they stay up. Micky van de Ven is going to re-sign. They’re giving such a positive spin on everything that they’re going to stay up.

“It’s almost like a distraction tactic, and they’re giving people hope. It’s dangerous. Micky van de Ven, look, he may do because Spurs will have to pay big money to keep players like that.

“They can’t have a repeat of this season, but the way that they’ve been trying to distract the fans, in my view, is very dangerous because they’re going to have to follow through on this for next season.”

Wyness points out that there may be an unsettling logic behind the club’s actions. If Spurs were to face relegation, unfulfilled promises could be submerged in the ensuing chaos.

Micky van de Ven’s salary reportedly falls between £90,000 and £100,000 per week, and Tottenham would likely seek a hefty fee for his services, with sources estimating it at £60M to over £100M if he were transferred.

Van de Ven is contracted to Tottenham Hotspur until June 30, 2029, after signing a six-year deal upon joining from Wolfsburg in August 2023.
